Sendik’s Food Market at The Corners of Brookfield, finished in early 2017, is uniquely located on the lower level of the Town Center complex. The exterior materials match the traditional red brick of the other local family-owned grocery stores. The owners wanted an interior color palette consisting of a light gray painted steel structure, white case work, and natural materials like stained wood and concrete. This helps employees and customers feel comfortable in an otherwise windowless building.
Two years later, Sendik’s owners wanted to capitalize on the growth of their home goods department and decided to expand to available retail space on the street level above the store. This provides a greater street presence with an outdoor space and more street signage.
To enhance the customer shopping experience between the two floors, glass elevators and a large opening with escalators were created in the center of the store. This allows natural light from the first-floor windows and skylight to shine into the lower level store.
To create space for the escalators, the centrally located deli department was relocated to the perimeter of the store. The area formerly occupied near the front of the store by the home department was changed into the produce department. The hospitality seating area near the registers was relocated and expanded into a Bistro Bar, with specialty coffee, juice, wine and beer available. Customers can now sit and have lunch at the bar or use the mezzanine space above the bar to have a meeting or enjoy a cup of coffee.
