Madisen Maher Architects (MMA) is just about to complete design work for Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission’s (MADACC) building renovation and addition. The MADACC facility services animal control needs for all of the nineteen municipalities that comprise Milwaukee County. “The building was built in 1998 and had shortcomings in its ability to maintain a hygienic environment for the animals and maintain staff efficiency,” says Erik Madisen, principal at Madisen Maher Architects. MADACC commissioned Madisen Maher Architects to do a feasibility study in 2013 to examine the existing conditions and hire designers to work with staff to design an environment that promotes animal health and improves staff efficiency.
The design includes a 3200 square foot kennel addition, a remodeled area which adds two cat wards and a complete remodeling of the surgery and treatment wards. The reception area is being remodeled to improve client privacy and through-put. Natural daylighting will be introduced to the animal areas. Building systems are being remodeled and upgraded to improve air quality and lighting, control humidity and reduce utility costs.
“New kennels will greatly reduce exposure to infectious disease and can be cleaned without moving the animals; plans have been revised to enable more efficient use of laundry facilities, food storage areas, surgery, induction, treatment and recovery areas; LED lighting improves energy efficiency; and a new HVAC system maintains temperature and proper humidity levels,” touts Karen Sparapani, Executive Director of MADACC. “The goals of improved quality of life for the animals and improved staff and building efficiency will be achieved,” she adds.
