The WHA offices had been located in a portion of a WHA-owned existing residential facility. The decision was then made to purchase an abandoned fire station from the city and convert it into office and meeting spaces. Design challenges included controlling public access, maintaining secure office areas, creating an inviting facade, and improving energy efficiency. The last challenge was met by improved insulation, installation of high-performance glazing, installation of solar shading, and capturing the energy of an active spring that originates below the building. The energy harvested from the spring water satisfies 90% of the heating and cooling needs of the building.
